This was a very interesting article to read. I've never really thought about the evolution of self portraits and selfies in our society. Growing up with the technology we had at our fingertips made the self portrait be overlooked. It was just something most girls would do but there is much more to it after reading this article. In the article, Claus-Christian Carbon1, shares “Most often, selfies are the product of a spontaneous intuition, feeling, or idea, which distinguishes them not only from painted self-portraits but also from professional portrait photography that usually follows a complex set of established compositional principles (Bruno et al., 2014), such as the principle of eye centering” This was the first quote that kind of stuck out to me. From the most modern selfie to the oldest self portrait there is some emotion or feeling that is being portrayed, from body position to facial expression to the positioning of the eyes. Self portraits and selfies depict different moments. While the human in the self portrait is very important in the message the background also gives us some content into the moment of the message. Back then these portraits were painted with the backgrounds of high status and luxuryness. This article made me analyze the selfies I take or receive from other people from self expression and the self depiction. Snapchat is chatting with selfies so from now on i'm going to pay more attention to the selfies i take and the emotions and depiction i share.
