I thought this article was very interesting. In class when we had originally listened to the 433 i was very confused as there was no sound and didn't realize the whole point of the song. I didn't think to listen to my surroundings because there were little to no sounds that surrounded me so i was first lost. Then after I was told the whole point of the song was to listen to the things around you I thought it was very interesting. Even in class every student was hearing something around them that other students were not experiencing which I think is unique. In the article a good line that stuck out to me was “That last thought ruled Cage’s life: he wanted to discard inherited structures, open doors to the exterior world, “let sounds be just sounds.” Gann writes, “It begged for a new approach to listening, perhaps even a new understanding of music itself, a blurring of the conventional boundaries between art and life”. This a quote that after reading this article I learned that music is just sounds and sounds and the way we compose sounds is art. I also found it very interesting how the article was talking about how silence is a sound. I never really thought about it and I agree and changed my perception of music, sounds, and what art is.This article was a good read and helped me better understand the next assignment.
